To compete in the Interstate Batteries Great American Race First It had to be put in running condition. A windshield had to be put in place to cover the shot out original or it would not pass inspection. The shot out side windows had to be covered with plexiglas to prevent water from entering if it rained. And the old dry rotted tires never would have lasted. Still the steering wheel was half rebar and half plastic. The seats were all shot up and there were bullet holes throughout. Bruce Gezon and Virginia “Ginni” Withers drove the death car for Mr Wade. Wade entered the car in the Great Race because he wanted to sell it and he believed that the publicity would increase its value.

This was the real last ride for Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow not to be mistaken with the “Movie car” use by Arthur Penn for Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty that is sometimes palmed off as the real deal.

One of the issues with using a small graphic tablet to draw is getting smooth lines. You hands tend to be less steady especially when trying to draw while looking at a screen and having you hand moving somewhere away from the screen. With that larger hand movements tend to be smoother. Like drawing on the postage stamp. So a bigger tablet is an advantage, even if you don’t use the entire surface it is nice to have it there when needed.

Of course larger 12 x 9 tablets from Wacom can cost three or four times this Monoprice unit. For the price of a 4×5 Intuos you can have this 12×9 incher. No doubt about it Wacom makes the best tablets and nothing beats their Cintiq LCD display units, but at two grand most people can’t afford them. I have a larger Cintiq and for professional work doing tight detailed illustration I can not live without it. What I do is this sort of stuff [[ASIN:B006CIYIZ2 Jaguar D Type Canvas Print / Canvas Art - Artist David Kyte]] But I found I wanted a standard type tablet for quick touch-ups without firing up the Wacom. This tablet proved to be MUCH better than I thought.

Negatives? Of course build quality is not at Wacom level but you are not going a abuse a tablet anyway, are you? it does not look as nice but who cares?. The pen is not as well balanced as well, mostly due to the fact it uses a AAA battery, too top heavy, Wacom’s are self powered. These also do not have the eraser end, I found myself flipping the pen over expecting it to be there, but you can get use to it. There is also no support for tilt and bearing, but I have found little use for this using the Wacom pens. The buttons on pen are shaped awkward. The manual is minimal at best and non existent for Mac users.

APPLE MAC Users…. Monoprice is a little unclear about this but YES this tablet works on a Mac, I use an Apple iMac for my work employing Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter and the tablet does work well. There is a Mac Drive on the suppled disk and some other Windows only software, mostly silly word processing stuff, but you did not buy this do spread sheets did you? Just install the drive from the CD, you may have to seek out the “Tablet Settings” app in your application folder to adjust tablet and pen settings. The Mac “Tablet Settings” application is good enough to get the job done. Setting for adjusting tip pressure and mapping for single or dual monitors and monitor proportions. A way to program the two buttons on the pen, And a way to program “Hot Cells” at the top of the tablet.

Loads of detail in this high resolution digital painting. Amon’s first year with Ferrari did not begin well. He crashed his road car and had to withdraw from the Brands Hatch pre-season F1 Race of Champions. His Team mate Bandini died following a crash during the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix, Another team mate Mike Parkes broke both his legs at the Belgian Grand Prix and in the aftermath Ludovico Scarfiotti went into temporary retirement. Amon therefore became Ferrari’s only driver for the rest of the season, until joined by Jonathan Williams for the final race in Mexico. At the end of 1967, Amon had achieved three third places and finished fourth in the Drivers’ Championship.

I usually work from a tight pencil sketch using different photos as reference. This is scanned and brought into Photoshop as a layer set to Multiple so only the dark line work shows up. Working more vector shape layers under the “go by” layer I build up the basic shapes and color of the car. These shape will later be rasterized to allow painting of shadow and highlights to give form to the body and engine components. The image will be up scaled in size and resolution as I work, with the final high resolution file allowing the addition of fine detail and my own exaggerated vision of how the car should look.

In 1968 Joe Leonard drove one of Andy Granatellis STP Lotus designed wedge shaped turbines cars and should have won the race but a fuel shaft broke while he was leading with only nine laps to go to the checkered flag. There were several of these cars in the race and Leonard’s was painted with a bright yellow nose and tire walls so his crew could spot him.

Print Detail Click for larger image

Granatelli also ran a turbine powered car in 1967 (my painting of that car here) and it almost won as well. The turbine was simple and light, so much so rules were later put in place to keep them from running away from the traditional internal combustion engines of the day, so after 69 they were no longer competitive. The wedge design was perfect aerodynamically and was later used by Lotus for their 72 series Formula One cars

This a 1967 Gruney Eagle Formula One Racing Car.

The video was created by taking screen captures of the image as it was developed. These were imported into a video editor and aligned with transition applied. The HD video (1080p or 720p) and be viewed on the YouTube site HERE.

Dan Gurney’s Titanium V12 powered Eagle formula one car which won the 1967 “Race of Champions” at Brands Hatch. One of the most beautiful Grand Prix cars ever built the Eagle also won the Grand Prix of Belgium in 1967, making this the first, and so far, only victory for an American in an American Grand Prix car in the modern era.
