Graham Hill Lotus 49 at Monte Carlo. Digital painting process from pencil sketch to final art. Process of painting a digital automotive painting from Pencil Sketch to Finished Art. I usually work from a tight pencil sketch using different photos as reference. This is scanned and brought into Photoshop as a layer set to Multiple so only the dark line work shows up. Working more vector shape layers under the “go by” layer I build up the basic shapes and color of the car. These shape will later be rasterized to allow painting of shadow and highlights to give form to the body and engine components. The image will be up scaled in size and resolution as I work, with the final high resolution file allowing the addition of fine detail and my own exaggerated vision of how the car should look.

Gurney 1967 Eagle F-1 Car, From Pencil Sketch to Final Art
Process of painting a digital automotive painting from Pencil Sketch to Finished Art. This a 1967 Gruney Eagle Formula One Racing Car. I usually work from a tight pencil sketch using different photos as reference. This is scanned and brought into Photoshop as a layer set to Multiple so only the dark line work shows up. Working more vector shape layers under the “go by” layer I build up the basic shapes and color of the car. These shape will later be rasterized to allow painting of shadow and highlights to give form to the body and engine components. The image will be up scaled in size and resolution as I work, with the final high resolution file allowing the addition of fine detail and my own exaggerated vision of how the car should look.
The video was created by taking screen captures of the image as it was developed. These were imported into a video editor and aligned with transition applied. The HD video (1080p or 720p) and be viewed on the YouTube site HERE.
