The 1960′s were decade of innovation at the Indianapolis 500. In 63 European car builders showed the old guard that light mid engines cars were the way to go. By 67 no front engine cars made it into the race. The 1967 race was almost won by this STP sponsored car with a side mounted Turbine power plant. The car being driven by Parnelli Jones dominated the field but with only 3 laps to go a $6 bearing failed allowing AJ Foyt to win his third 500.
Car came to be known as Silent Sam, the jet like turbine motor in the car would Whoosh around the track rather than Roar. The side mounted motor made for perfect balance for a car designed for left turn only racing. The fact it had all wheel drive helped put the power to the ground. The turbine also had great gas millage cutting down on the amount of pit stops that needed to be made. Restrictions added to the turbines for the next year made the cars less competitive but turbine power cars did appear in 1968.
